In response to a NHTSA investigation Toyota announced a recall to replace rusting rear cross-members on 2000-2003 Tundra frames in November of 2009. Hot Cars said that the frames were not properly treated in the beginning and mainly became damaged in the rear. The prime example is the front brake rotor warping on 2000-2003 Tundras.

While its important to replace the rear cross member many owners have related stories to us of Tundras that can not be aligned broken suspension mounts and a myriad of minor problems that are symptomatic of a rusted frame. 2006 Toyota Tundra truck bed started rusting several years ago. Toyota in 2016 settled a class-action suit by agreeing to spend 3 billion to repair millions of Tacomas Tundras and Sequioa SUVs with rusting frames.
Discovered a lg rust hole on frame and contacted Toyota dealer that informed me of recall but expired date. A previous recall of 690000 Tacoma trucks for rust and corrosion showed Toyota was aware of the problem. My Tundra was under the frame rust recall in 2014.
