On my 2000 tundra when I push the switch for 4 wheel drive I can hear it engage and it goes into 4 wheel high. If youre not moving the teeth in the front differential may not line up and engage leaving you in 2wd which should also be indicated by a flashing 4wd light. I think my 2002 Sequoia shares many 4WD system details with the Tundra.

I cant understand why our 2007 Toyota Tundra was running just fine we pulled up to a stop light and it died. My 2000 4wd Tundra is a fine vehicle expect that. If it overheats it may no longer be able to operate according to spec causing the 4WD light to flash.

2011 toyota tundra 4x4 SR5 - 12000 miles on it. Once 4WD mode is engaged successfully the 44 light. My 2000 low mileage Tundra would not engage 4WD.
